How to Write a Methodology Section That Examiners Can Follow

What to include in research design, sampling, data collection, analysis, ethics, and limitations without burying the reader in procedure.

Explain why before explaining how

A methodology section is not a lab diary. It should justify the design choices that make your evidence credible. Readers need to know why the design, sample, instruments, and analysis fit the research question.

A useful order is design, participants or materials, data collection, analysis, ethics, and limitations. Each part should connect back to the question.

  • Name the research design in the first few paragraphs.
  • Define the sample or corpus and how it was selected.
  • Describe analysis steps with enough detail for evaluation.

Make limitations specific

Generic limitation paragraphs weaken trust. Instead of saying the sample was small, explain what kind of generalization the sample can and cannot support.

Good limitations do not apologize for the study. They set the boundary conditions that make the findings honest.
