How to Cite ChatGPT and AI Tools in Academic Writing

When to cite AI, when to disclose AI use, and how to keep prompts, outputs, and human authorship responsibilities clear.

Citing and disclosing are not the same task

A citation points readers to recoverable source material. AI chat outputs are often not recoverable in the same way, so many institutions ask for disclosure instead of citation.

Before using AI in assessed work, check your institution and supervisor policy. Some allow brainstorming and editing with disclosure. Others limit or prohibit generative tools for coursework.

  • Record the tool, date, prompt purpose, and how the output was used.
  • Do not cite AI as evidence for factual or scholarly claims.
  • Keep responsibility for accuracy, originality, and source verification with the author.

Use AI for process, not fake authority

AI can help plan, summarize your own notes, find unclear prose, or generate revision checklists. It should not stand in for reading, evidence evaluation, or citation verification.

A transparent AI-use note can be short: name the tool, name the task, and explain that all claims, sources, and final wording were reviewed by the author.
